The ‘Dangal’ of Process Management
In the small village of Balali, Haryana lived Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler, who gave up his dreams of going to the Olympics because of family pressure and responsibilities. After 13 years, when he locked away his medals and dreams in a trunk. He realized his daughters had the potential to fulfil his dreams.
And, we all know he was absolutely right! His daughters, Geeta and Babita are exceptional wrestlers who are an inspiration to many young women in India. Moreover, their story is a perfect example of aligning proper process management with life. And, how this alignment can help you achieve success in any field!
It was quite evident from the movie, ‘Dangal’ that they had the potential but it was the strategic and continuous efforts that made them successful and brought laurels to India. These efforts fit perfectly with the process management strategies. Let’s see how?
Perfect Alignment of Process Management strategies in their practices.
Since childhood, Mahavir Phogat was shown to be a tough couch. He followed effective process management strategies to train the girls. His step-wise process management approach helped him tackle all the obstacles on the way.
He instilled the flame of determination and sportsmanship within the girls through effective strategies. And, this made both the sisters become impossible-to-defeat and win every next wrestling competition.
But the turning point came when Geeta won the National Level Wrestling Competition. She had to shift at National Sports Academy Training Centre in Patiala, Punjab State for her further training. The new Coach, Pramod Kadam had a different training style and did not let Geeta use the techniques of her Father.
How External Influence Changed the Course of Processes?
Geeta made new friends in the academy, and lost her focus. The change of environment brought a behavioural change in Geeta’s attitude. And ultimately caused a rift between the father-daughter relationship.
This is a sheer case of external interference that both of them didn’t anticipate before. Had they calculated this risk compliance and assessed a risk management properly beforehand, this drift could have been avoided.
Nonetheless, Geeta learned it in a hard way. When she started competing in International matches, she kept losing match-after-match. This made her realize the mistake she made. She regained her faith in the strategies her father made. And, she understood the importance of continuous improvements.
Be it wrestling practices or business practices, only by having a clear process definition and implementing appropriate strategies you can be successful.
How Simple Process Improvements Benefit Your Long-term Goals?
For any process improvement, it is important to identify the bottlenecks in the process first. Like Geeta, you also should be firm and keep your values intact even when facing hard circumstances. On realizing her mistakes, she apologized and made amends with her father. And they started following the routine like earlier.
Her father also understands that old tactics had to be changed keeping the true value of the game intact. This is the true approach BPM that he incorporated. With the advancement of time and new developments, we need to change our strategies to win at any game of life.
This is exactly how process reengineering works for your business. Traditional improvement practices often ignore the most important thing: “Process improvements”. Without which the overall organization maturity isn’t enhanced. For a better process improvement approach, the most important question is ‘Which process needs to be improved?’
Geeta and her father identified that her strength was attacking and with proper strategic tactics, they used it to their benefit. And eventually following her father’s strategies and efficient process management tactics she wins the Dangal of life!
Similar to Geeta’s case, every business is different, their goals are different, and hence their approaches have to be specific. So, we learn that even a minor change of perspective can help you achieve your major goals.
The process management ensures that rigidity from the processes is eradicated. Any system is successful, only when it’s flexible.
Be it the game of wrestling or the game of business, you need to constantly focus and continuously work for improvements to win.
Business process management helps you achieve the best outcome from your business. It identifies and aligns with your vision and helps you make business decisions based on your strengths and weaknesses.
